These are the mountainsides of Mt. Nemrut (
Mt. Nemrud Mountain) which is 2150 m high, situated in the
Kahta- Adıyaman province. During 80 B.C.-72 A.D., the
Kommagene Kingdom reigned on the lands in the Adıyaman
region. The God and the King Statues and reliefs are the
remains of the Tumulus and Hierothesion of King Antioches
I of Kommanege, who reigned during 69-36 B.C. These
remains were discovered in 1881 by a German road
construction engineer, Karl Sester. These were restored in
1984 and the region was declared a National Park in 1989.
The remains are on the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
